Manuscript illumination, often tucked away safely between the closed pages of a book for several centuries, has retained a freshness of colouring unparalleled in any other form of medieval painting.
This introduction explains the separate craft disciplines in the art of illumination: it unravels 'codicology' - the detective examination of how a book was made by an analysis of the parts combined with a consideration of historical data and provenance - and looks at the development of illumination from the seventh century Book of Durrow until the mid-sixteenth century, when the printed book finally displaced it.
For the scholar it is the only pictorial record available of an extensive part of the V & A collection including bequests of George Reid,George Salting,David Currie and Sir Sydney Cockerell.John Harthan was for many years a member of the V & A and retired in 1976 as Keeper of the Library. He has since written several works on different aspects of the Art of the Book [Books of Hours (Thames & Hudson, 1977), and The History of the Illuminated Book (Thames & Hudson,1981).]
'This book is one of a series designed to introduce various aspects of the decorative arts to the general public. These books are illustrated by objects from our own collection and written by our Curators. They provide full and informative texts illustrated by numerous colour illustrations. . . .'
